Discover Milan's hidden museums during MuseoCity with a private cultural itinerary. Art historians, curated access and exclusive collections....

Milan is often celebrated for fashion, finance and design. Yet once a year, the city reveals a deeper identity — one rooted in collections, archives, ateliers and private institutions rarely accessible to the public.

MuseoCity Milano transforms the entire city into an open cultural network, connecting historic houses, foundations, studios and museums in a unique urban celebration. In 2026, the event reaches a milestone: its tenth edition, running from February 6 to March 15, with the theme “Le imprese della cultura” — The Enterprises of Culture.

For discerning travelers, this is not simply an event. It is an opportunity for a highly curated private cultural experience in Milan — one that connects 154 participating institutions, 64 hidden masterworks and a city-wide program spanning over five weeks.

MuseoCity 2026: The Tenth Edition in Numbers

An illustration depicting a Milan Skyline and attractions

Promoted by the City of Milan in collaboration with Associazione MuseoCity ETS and supported by Fondazione Cariplo, the 2026 edition is the most ambitious to date. The numbers tell the story:

  • 154 participating institutions — art museums, history museums, design studios, scientific institutions, house museums, enterprise museums, foundations and artist archives
  • 40 institutions participating for the first time — including Archivio Bonalumi, Archivio Storico Ricordi, Cittadella degli Archivi, Fondazione MAIRE, Museo della Filosofia at the University of Milan and Studio Alberto Garutti
  • 64 hidden masterworks unveiled through the Museo Segreto program
  • 30+ museums and archives featured in over 20 storefronts across Milan through Musei in Vetrina
  • 124 institutions involved in the core programming week

The theme “Le imprese della cultura” celebrates the courage and determination shared by art and sport — a fitting tribute in the year Milan hosts the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

The 2026 Program: Dates and Structure

MuseoCity 2026 unfolds across two distinct phases, offering flexibility for travelers planning a visit:

Extended Program: February 6 – March 15

The broader program spans over five weeks and includes the Musei in Vetrina initiative — where more than 20 galleries and shops across Milan display artworks, objects and documents from participating museums and archives. Milan becomes, quite literally, a distributed museum. Exhibitions such as “Leonardo alla IULM” at the Tam Tam Communication Museum and “Puppets Jazz!” at the MUTEF Carlo Colla & Figli puppet theater also run throughout this window.

Core Week: February 27 – March 5

The heart of MuseoCity concentrates 124 institutions into a single week of extraordinary openings, guided tours, workshops, conferences and curated visits. This is when the city’s most exclusive doors open — and when a private itinerary delivers the greatest impact.

Museo Segreto: 64 Hidden Masterworks

Visitors exploring a private cultural institution during MuseoCity Milan

One of MuseoCity’s most extraordinary features is the Museo Segreto — a program where participating institutions unveil works that are normally kept in storage, in restoration or simply not included in permanent displays.

In 2026, 64 secret masterworks will be revealed to the public. The thematic threads running through this year’s selections include athletics and sport exploits, Italian military heroism from World War I, scientific exploration and international expeditions — all resonating with the edition’s broader theme of human endeavor.

For art collectors, historians and culturally curious travelers, the Museo Segreto represents the most compelling reason to visit during MuseoCity. These are works you cannot see at any other time of the year.

Musei in Vetrina: When Milan’s Storefronts Become Exhibition Spaces

Running throughout the full February 6 – March 15 window, Musei in Vetrina transforms Milan’s commercial landscape into a cultural one. Over 20 galleries and shops host site-specific installations featuring works and documents from more than 30 museums and archives.

Among the participating archives are some of Italy’s most distinguished names: Archivio Missoni, Archivio Storico Bracco, Fondazione Teatro alla Scala, Lavazza and Ferragamo. Walking through Milan’s streets during this period becomes, in itself, a curated museum visit.

For travelers with an interest in fashion heritage and corporate culture, Musei in Vetrina offers something no standard museum tour can replicate.

Highlight Events of MuseoCity 2026

The 2026 program features several landmark events that stand out for their rarity and cultural weight:

“Oltre il Podio” at Palazzo Castiglioni

One of the edition’s signature exhibitions, “Oltre il Podio — Scatti, storia e arte” (Beyond the Podium — Shots, History and Art) takes place at the magnificent Palazzo Castiglioni on Corso Venezia, from February 12 to 17. Curated by Ludovica Serafini and Roberto Palomba, the show interlaces photography, cinema, art and sports memory. It features archival works by photographer Filippo Romano and new backstage images from the Milano-Cortina 2026 Opening Ceremony by renowned fashion photographer Giampaolo Sgura. The exhibition draws from ten MuseoCity institutional archives and includes the premiere of the film “Mondi a Milano” by Giovanni Pitschelder.

Galleria dell’Antico Egitto at Castello Sforzesco

On March 4, the Galleria dell’Antico Egitto inside Castello Sforzesco reopens with a completely renewed display of its Egyptian collection — a rare opportunity to experience one of Milan’s most significant archaeological spaces in its new form.

Fondazione Remo Bianco

From March 2 to 4, the Fondazione Remo Bianco — dedicated to one of Italy’s most innovative post-war artists — opens its doors for an extraordinary visit. Remo Bianco’s work spanned the Neo-Dada and kinetic art movements, making this a rare encounter with a largely under-explored chapter of Italian contemporary art.

Premio Rimani: Three Hidden Treasures Illuminated

The second edition of the Premio Rimani awards special lighting to three remarkable but often overlooked works:

  • Grande bassorilievo by Arnaldo Pomodoro — hosted by Assimpredil ANCE, a monumental sculpture by one of Italy’s most celebrated artists
  • Collezione Pomologica Francesco Garnier Valletti — an astonishing collection of 1,674 handcrafted artificial fruit specimens dating to 1872
  • Boscovich Specola wooden model (1764–65) at MusAB — an 18th-century astronomical instrument of extraordinary craftsmanship

Corporate & Industrial Museums

Several of Milan’s enterprise museums participate with extraordinary openings. Banca Mediolanum hosts “Family & Friends” on February 27–28. The Cimbali Group Flagship inaugurates “1956–2026: CHE IMPRESE!” on February 27 at 6 PM, while the MUMAC — the Coffee Machine Museum — offers a special guided tour with free shuttle from central Milan on March 1. Fondazione MAIRE debuts in the program as one of the 40 new entries.

Leonardo alla IULM

Running from February 6 to March 11 at the Università IULM’s Tam Tam Communication Museum, this exhibition explores Leonardo da Vinci’s legacy through a contemporary lens — connecting his genius to modern communication and design.

IED Guided Walks: Three Thematic Routes Through Milan

In a special collaboration, students from the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) lead three guided evening walks during the core week, each offering a distinct perspective on Milan’s cultural identity:

  • March 3 at 6 PM — “Quadrilatero: Showcases Between Fashion and Creativity” — A walk through the Fashion District exploring the increasingly close relationship between fashion and contemporary art
  • March 4 at 6 PM — “The Contemporaries: Milan’s Living Art Scene” — A route through galleries and major institutions including Museo del Novecento, mapping the city’s vibrant contemporary art landscape
  • March 5 at 6 PM — “Architecture and Design: Italian Craftsmanship Heritage” — From the MAIRE towers to the ADI Design Museum, a journey through Milan’s permanent laboratory of architecture and design

These walks offer a young, dynamic perspective on Milan — and for private guests, they serve as excellent inspiration for customized itineraries.

MuseoCity and the Milano-Cortina 2026 Connection

The 2026 edition is deliberately aligned with the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. The overarching theme — “The Enterprises of Culture” — draws a parallel between athletic achievement and cultural perseverance. The “Oltre il Podio” exhibition at Palazzo Castiglioni directly explores this intersection, with fashion photographer Giampaolo Sgura contributing exclusive backstage imagery from the Opening Ceremony.

For international visitors arriving in Milan for the Games, MuseoCity provides an extraordinary cultural complement — a way to understand the city beyond its sporting moment.

A Private MuseoCity Experience: Elevating the Event

Curator-led private museum viewing during MuseoCity Milan event

With 154 institutions, 64 hidden masterworks and events spanning five weeks, MuseoCity can be overwhelming for an independent visitor. A curated private MuseoCity tour in Milan cuts through the complexity and delivers a focused, meaningful experience.

A private itinerary during MuseoCity 2026 may include:

  • Pre-selected access to the most significant Museo Segreto unveilings
  • A curated Musei in Vetrina route through the Fashion District, connecting Archivio Missoni, Ferragamo and Fondazione Teatro alla Scala displays
  • Priority scheduling for “Oltre il Podio” at Palazzo Castiglioni and the reopened Egyptian gallery at Castello Sforzesco
  • Licensed art historian guidance tailored to your interests — from Renaissance archives to contemporary design foundations
  • Private transfers between venues across the city
  • Exclusive dining reservations near participating sites

Instead of navigating independently through dozens of options, guests experience a coherent cultural narrative — designed around their interests and timed to match the most significant openings.

Combining MuseoCity with a Tailored Milan Itinerary

A private MuseoCity experience integrates seamlessly into a broader Milan itinerary. During the core week (February 27 – March 5), a sample day might include:

  • Morning: Museo Segreto visits at two or three institutions, with art historian commentary on each hidden masterwork
  • Midday: A Musei in Vetrina walk through Brera or the Quadrilatero, pausing at fashion archive displays
  • Afternoon: Private Duomo terrace tour or Leonardo’s Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie
  • Evening: One of the IED guided thematic walks, followed by dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant nearby

This layered approach creates continuity between Milan’s cultural depth, its living creative scene and its world-class gastronomy.

Experience Milan Differently During MuseoCity

MuseoCity is not about checking off museums. It is about understanding how Milan preserves and presents its cultural capital — from Arnaldo Pomodoro’s monumental bas-reliefs to 18th-century astronomical instruments, from Missoni’s fashion archives to a philosopher’s museum at the University of Milan.

In its tenth edition, the event has matured into one of Europe’s most distinctive cultural initiatives — inclusive, city-wide and deeply rooted in Milan’s identity as a place where art, industry and innovation have always intersected.

For travelers who value perspective, context and discretion, a curated private MuseoCity experience in Milan offers rare access to the intellectual heart of the city.

Milan, during MuseoCity, is not simply visited.

It is interpreted.
