Tour Details
The first thing that strikes you about Bergamo is its walls: it is in fact one of the few Italian municipalities, along with Lucca, Ferrara and Grosseto, which has a historic center entirely surrounded by walls dating back to the sixteenth century and erected to divide the city from nearby Milan to protect it from invasion attempts.
The area enclosed by these splendid walls, which are still intact today, is called Città Alta (Upper City) and is the most beautiful district of Bergamo, with its cobbled streets, silent views, churches and the tolling of bells, the scent of bread baked by the historic "prestinai". Discover Piazza Vecchia, the city's living room, enriched by prestigious historical buildings, including the Palazzo della Ragione, which dates back to the late 1200s and where justice was administered.
The nearby Piazza Duomo hosts the splendid Romanesque building of the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, a Colleoni Chapel, a funerary monument dating back to the 15th century. What makes the heart of Bergamo Tour special: discovering a beautiful town on a human scale, with an old town center rich in art but also in characteristic bars and family-run stores.
