During the 1800s the villa, by then abandoned and in ruins, was purchased by a Scottish botanist, Sir Francis Neville Reid, who took care of the requalification and renovation. A few years later Richard Wagner fell in love with the Villa and its gardens and decided to move to Ravello to find the inspiration for the second act of his Parsifal. Wagner's spirit still lives on in Villa Rufolo, home of the prestigious Ravello Festival, held every summer on a stage built overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and dedicated to classical and instrumental music.
